HammarBear - Gardening Update 18 April 2020

Welcome to another garden update. This one will be longer than most, because I remembered to take more photos this time!! Anyway, here goes. With the Potatoes, nothing green has cleared the dirt yet, but it's been pretty cold lately. We had snow for the last few days, and it's finally been above 45 degrees.

.

Next up is this lot here. There's a ton going on here. So..one by one. I FINALLY got my seed pack in, so I planted some of the seeds in the starter trays today. I forgot which tray was which...for now..but I planted 6 Jalapeno pepper plants, 6 Kale plants, 6 Cayenne Pepper plants, 6 Pea plants, 6 Lettuce plants and 6 of something else, which I'm drawing a blank on at the moment...

.

Next, look at the progress of the Garlic!! I did further research, and the garlic I bought was from a farm in Michigan, where I am as well, and that planting these in spring will work fine. So that's cool.

.

The bucket has onion bulbs planted, just to get them sprouting. The 2 pots to the side have Rheubarb, though they haven't sprouted just yet.

.

The last big rain storm we had, I captured almost 10 gallons of rainwater, which I've been using to water the plants with. This is the remaining 5 gallons, which has kept well in this jug. I'll be making a rain barrel pretty soon.

.

And now on to the place the plants will be put once it's consistently warm out. The back yard. The two cleared spots will be where much of the planting will happen. I may widen them out a bit, but we will see.

.

This 8'x4' section will be home to the potatoes, garlic and onions.

.

This smaller plot is where the peas, peppers and tomatoes will go.

.

The compost seems to be decomposing nicely. I need to turn it all soon, but the pile is a foot shorter than it was 2 weeks ago.

.

Finally, the spot where all the leaves were. The grass was dead, but new sprouts are coming back. The area is getting filled in nicely. The raking probably did it some good.

More to come soon!

-Phil
