Off-Road Trip: Detroit Gambler 500 - Part 2 - The Walmart Meetup

I had heard that the Gambler 500 was essentially a large-scale Top Gear cheap car challenge, where you have a limited budget with which to build a car for off-road. . |

Ideally, you start with a $500 car, or as close to that as possible, and make it wierd...and as off-road capable as possible...which makes for some pretty awesome/awful/hilarious cars. . |

This volvo, with the back half cut off and replaced with a prerunner-ish tube frame and tire mount was awesome. Probably my second favorite car on the whole adventure. . |

This Tracker/Sidekick/Samurai (not sure which) was pretty cool, with the potato cannon and ragtop. Great color choice too. . |

Some of the vehicles had text and names that were...slightly non-family-friendly. But, then again, that's sort of the nature of the event. . |

I saw a bunch of guys around this Ranger, and wondered what exactly was so interesting... |

As it turned out, it was the Mercedes Diesel swap. . |

That will wrap up this post. The next Gambler 500 post should be the roll-out and paved road section bits of the trip. Hopefully it's not another 6 months until then. -Phil |
