Car culture: Burnouts

The burnout. Everyone has seen one. Lots of noise, lots of smoke, and a guaranteed way to draw attention to yourself. At the Olympic Broil Tuesday Night Cruise In, it's a common sight to see several cars leave with a smoke show.

If you aren't aware of what a burnout is, it's a rather simple thing. It's simply forcing the drive wheels to break traction, usually while stationary, causing the tires to heat up and burn off a layer of rubber, while making clouds of smoke and lots of noise.

Most of the time, a burnout is only necessary at a drag strip, just before staging, for the purpose of making the tires as sticky as possible by heating them up.

Plus, burnouts make for great photo opportunities.
